Holiday? in Lyme Regis
So, we’re back!
We decided to come back on the Thursday instead of the Friday. The weather forecast was bad and there seemed no point in dragging it out another day.
We had forgotten how hilly and cramped Lyme Regis is. Totally unsuitable for anyone who is not young, active and able bodied. The house we rented was perched on a mountain, about half a mile from the centre of town on a slope so steep that even Lara & Darren only walked it once. Phil of course walked it every day - madness!
We tried to go down to the town for food in the evening a couple of times, but there was nowhere to park, especially with mum as she’s not all that steady on cobbles or uneven pavements. So, most of the time we headed out of LR to easier places like Axminster, Dorchester and Weymouth.
We were lucky with the weather for 4 days (good going for us!) and then it all collapsed. The house was great, beautiful decking patio with plenty of room and far reaching views. We even made the beach once! Phil dropped us off and then picked us up.
From my point of view the worst thing was no 3G (never mind wifi) in any of LR! Can you believe that? In this day and age. So, most of the things I rely on my phone for, finding restaurants, TV guide, news etc wasn’t possible. There didn’t seem to be any internet cafe’s or even places that would deliver a takeaway! Compared to home, where we have everything, it made for more work, rather than less.
So, the shopping was a total pain in the arse. Eventually we realised there were good supermarkets in the outlying towns - with car parks attached! So, we went there. This is a real pity as I usually like to use the small local outlets, but in this case having to hike your shopping up a 5 in 1 hill for half a mile is ridiculous.
Bye bye Lyme Regis - until you make yourself more holiday friendly I’m not coming back, and L & D weren’t impressed either!
